Invention & History
Vedic Mathematics is an ancient system of calculation which comprises a collection of techniques and sutras to solve mathematical problems in an easy and faster way. It includes 16 Sutras which are formulae and 13 sub-Sutras which are sub-Formulae. Vedic Mathematics sutras can be applied to solve any problems involving arithmetic, geometry, algebra, conics, and calculus. Vedic Mathematics has been proved to be beneficial for students and anyone practicing maths in saving time, increasing concentration power, expanding brain power, and memorizing.
Vedic Mathematics is an ancient system of calculation which comprises a collection of techniques and sutras to solve mathematical problems in an easy and faster way.
Vedic Mathematics was discovered by Shri Bharathi Krishna Tirthaji between AD 1911 and 1918. Regarded as the Father of Vedic Maths, Tirthaji published his findings in a book titled Vedic Mathematics in 1957 wherein he wrote about the 16 Sutras.

16 Sutras of Vedic Mathematics
Sutra (Formula) | Brief Description |
---|---|
1. Ekādhikena Pūrvena (एकाधिकेन पूर्वेण) | By one more than the previous one – squaring numbers ending in 5. |
2. Nikhilam Navataścaramam Daśatah (निखिलं नवतश्चरमं दशतः) | All from 9 and the last from 10 – subtraction & multiplication near base numbers. |
3. Ūrdhva-Tiryagbhyām (ऊर्ध्व-तिर्यग्भ्याम्) | Vertically & crosswise – general multiplication formula. |
4. Parāvartya Yojayet (परावर्त्य योजयेत्) | Transpose & adjust – useful in division/equations. |
5. Śūnyam Sāmyasamuccaye (शून्यं साम्यसमुच्चये) | When the sum is the same, it is zero – solves equations quickly. |
6. Ānurūpye Śūnyamanyat (आनुरूप्ये शून्यमन्यत्) | If one ratio is in proportion, the other is zero – shortcut for proportions. |
7. Sankalana-Vyavakalanābhyām (संकलन-व्यवकलनाभ्याम्) | By addition & subtraction – helps in simultaneous equations. |
8. Puranāpuranābhyām (पुरणापुरणाभ्याम्) | By completion or non-completion – factorization & expansions. |
9. Calana-Kālanābhyām (चलन-कालानाभ्याम्) | Sequential motion – used in calculus. |
10. Yāvadūnam (यावदूनम्) | Whatever the deficiency – squaring numbers near base. |
11. Vyastisamastih (व्यष्टि-समष्टिः) | Part & whole – useful in algebra and numbers. |
12. Śeṣānyankena Caramena (शेषान्यङ्केन चरमेण) | Remainder by last digit – finding remainders. |
13. Sopāntyadvayamantyam (सोपान्त्यद्वयमन्त्यम्) | The ultimate and twice the penultimate – divisibility tests. |
14. Ekanyūnena Pūrvena (एकन्यूननेन पूर्वेण) | By one less than the previous one – multiplication of 9/99/999 series. |
15. Gunitasamuccayah (गुणितसमुच्चयः) | Product of the sum = sum of the products – factorization. |
